Carpet and area rugs are integral to the aesthetics and comfort of a home. They add warmth, color, and texture to living spaces but also endure heavy foot traffic, spills, and dirt. Proper care and maintenance are essential to extend the life of your carpets and rugs while keeping them looking fresh and clean.
Regular Maintenance
Regular vacuuming is the cornerstone of carpet and rug care. Vacuum at least once a week, and more often in high-traffic areas, to remove dirt, dust, and allergens that can become embedded in the fibers. Use a vacuum with a beater bar or rotating brush for carpets to lift dirt more effectively, and adjust the height setting to match the pile of your carpet or rug. For delicate area rugs, especially those made of natural fibers like wool or silk, consider using a vacuum without a beater bar to avoid damaging the fibers.
In addition to vacuuming, rotate your rugs every six months to ensure even wear. This is particularly important for rugs in sun-exposed areas, as sunlight can cause fading over time. Using rug pads beneath your area rugs can also prevent slipping and reduce wear on both the rug and the floor underneath.
